Following a clumsy accident, the Prince confronts himself. While the Queen hopes he won't be too hard on himself, the Princess keeps herself above the fray and the King just wants to see a little more self control. Meanwhile the Pumpkin Wraith lurks in the shadows ... Featuring the remarkable illustrations of Jessica Gadra, this clever tale carries the shadowy undertones without ever being scary. Unexpected lessons pop up from unexpected places ... but not the ones you might expect! Good for pre-readers, but with complex underlying themes that will challenge readers through second grade level. The grownups will have fun, too! Sneaking Treats will hold a special appeal for adoptive and inter-ethnic families.Suggested age range 5-7.

Kathy's Review:

So cute! A beautifully-illustrated children's book that's perfect for Halloween. The Prince is a little boy who accidentally gets tripped up on one of the family's pumpkins, smashing and ruining it. When he goes to his room after his father asks him to control himself, he and his Self (a shadow) separate. His Self goes missing in the house, so it takes all the family to find his Self again. The shadows search parts of the house while the people search another. With clever play on phrases like "no one to blame but my Self," and "beside himself," this is an adorable tale that's not too scary for the kids. The images are mostly black and white, with traces of color, such as orange for a jack-o-lantern. But the level of detail in the drawings is remarkable. If you have little ones at home and want to read a delightful Halloween story, this is perfect. And, all the author's proceeds are donated to charity! You can't go wrong!
